*04 BETTER HANDS
(Mindy Johnson, John Nanni)

I walked you down our hill
On your very first day
Then the bus came down to take you on your way
Your hand was holding mine
So little at one time
Growing up so fast before my eyes, I said

Jesus hold him close
Protect him all the time
For I know your hands
Are better than mine

I drove you to the mall
With your friends to hang out
What was all of that teenage talk about
You jumped out of the van
Like a boy without plan
I said "Where's my kiss?" you said "I’ll call you when I can."

Jesus hold him close
Protect him all the time
For I know your hands
Are better than mine
Bridge

Now you're standing in your uniform
You say "mama, I want you to know
I couldn’t have made it without you
Now it's time for me to go.", I whisper

Jesus hold him close
Protect him all the time
For I know your hands
Are better than mine

Jesus hold him close
Protect him all the time
For I know your hands
Are better than mine

Better hands than mine
Better hands than mine

True story.

Well, stories.

Walter is now 9.  This story started when I walked him down our hill to the bus stop.  First full day of kindergarten.
He seemed so huge, and yet...too small for me to let go so soon!

We lived in Nashville and he was zoned for a metro Nashville school.  I told myself (and my husband) that my son was NOT going to a metro school.  I used to teach, I knew what it was like.  My husband kept telling me to pray about it and listen to what God was telling us.  The more I said no, the more I heard the Holy Spirit whisper yes.  We wrestled, the Holy Spirit and I did, and finally I submitted to my Heavenly Father.  God wanted Walter to attend this school.
But God...he has a peanut allergy!  But God he has a lisp, he's.... !

With a final sigh, I let go of my hands trying desperately to protect him, and a friend assured me, "Mindy, he is in better hands than you could give him."

And so, Better Hands was born.

Walter was fine.  Kindergarten was fine.  His lisp disappeared. (God has since called us to live in Franklin.)

God has always had better hands than I could ever provide.  And He has proven that to me time and time again and although I know deep within me that God protects him, I still need to be reminded.

And I will always need to remember to pray for my children.  No matter how old they are.

The teenage part of the song was the experience of John Nanni, my amazing producer.  His kids now grown, he remembers all too well, the prayer of a parent in that stage.  Who is this crazy kid?  What is this crazy teenage talk?  Jesus hold him close and protect him!

The man in uniform leaving for duty is the story of my mother-in-law, Judy and my husband, Jeff.  Jeff was in the navy for two years before college.  Mom Johnson is a strong believer and committed prayer warrior.  At one point Jeff's aircraft carrier was attacked, some sailors died, and Mom J didn't know if Jeff was even alive.  You better believe she prayed for Jesus to hold him close and protect him!
